Preparing for your appointment is an important step in making sure that your time with our volunteers is as efficient and helpful as possible. This step will provide you with instructions that will ensure that the volunteer lawyer has the information they need to help you with your legal issue.
We will also provide you with other community resources that will help with your appointment and beyond.
Prepare your Documents
Documents are often the most important source of information and context in a legal matter. Documents make a lawyer’s job faster and easier, helping you to get the most out of your appointment. Sometimes, lawyers can see helpful information in documents that may not stand out to someone less familiar with the area of law.
Although your appointment is up to an hour long, lawyers can review a variety of documents quickly and point out the information most helpful to your case. Make sure that you bring to your appointment any document which you think is relevant to the dispute. If you have received any court documents or other official-looking documents, make sure that you bring them to your appointment.
Given that your appointment is up to an hour long, try to keep your documents as organized as possible. This will help the lawyer to focus on finding the relevant information rather than organizing the documents. It is often helpful to have documents organized in chronological order. Don’t bring more than you can carry.
Write a Summary of your Story
Each time that we tell a story, we tend to include slightly different information. When you have your appointment, it is important that the lawyer have as much relevant information as possible. For that reason, we find that it is helpful when clients write a brief timeline or summary of their legal issue. As you remember important information, you can add to or change your summary before your appointment. Remember, your appointment is up to an hour. Please do not write more than two pages.
